Hindi Program & Curriculum

Requirements for the Minor in Hindi Language

Students may obtain a minor in Hindi by completing the following six courses: Hindi 101, 102, 201, 202, 301, and 302 or an approved course in South Asian culture.

Students with previous knowledge of Hindi may obtain a minor in Hindi by taking one course at their present level of proficiency, three additional courses above their present level, and one approved course in Hindi literature.

Graduate Study in Hindi Language

Hindi Language Courses

HNDI 101. Elementary Hindi I

Elementary Hindi 101 is designed to provide the initial level of training in all proficiencies associated with the language, namely reading, writing, speaking and listening comprehension.Specifically, students will learn the Devanagari writing system and the Hindi-Urdu sound system, they will gain the ability to read and understand short texts on familiar topics, speak about oneself and one's environment, initiate conversations on topics of general interest, understand the basic sentence structures of Hindi-Urdu, and acquire general familiarity with the cultural context(s) in which Hindi-Urdu is used.

HNDI 102. Elementary Hindi II

Elementary Hindi 102 is designed to provide continuing basic training in all proficiencies associated with the language, namely reading, writing, speaking and listening comprehension.Specifically, students will work on the ability to read and understand short texts on familiar topics, speak about oneself and one's environment, initiate conversations on topics of general interest, understand the basic sentence structures of Hindi-Urdu, and acquire general familiarity with the cultural contexts in which Hindi-Urdu is used.

HNDI 201. Intermediate Hindi I

Intermediate Hindi 201 is designed to provide continuing training in all proficiencies associated with the language, namely reading, writing, speaking and listening comprehension.Specifically, students will attain the ability to read and understand texts in Hindi-Urdu on familiar topics, to speak confidently and effectively while interacting with other Hindi-Urdu speakers regarding a wide range of common situations, to write concise texts expressing their thoughts and views, and they will acquire general familiarity with the cultural context(s) in which Hindi-Urdu is used.

HNDI 202. Intermediate Hindi II

Intermediate Hindi 202 is designed to provide continuing training in all proficiencies associated with the language, namely reading, writing, speaking and listening comprehension.Specifically, students will attain the ability to read and understand texts in Hindi-Urdu on familiar topics, to speak confidently and effectively while interacting with other Hindi-Urdu speakers regarding a wide range of common situations, to write concise texts expressing their thoughts and views, and they will acquire general familiarity with the cultural context(s) in which Hindi-Urdu is used.

HNDI 301. Advanced Hindi I

Advanced Hindi 301 is designed to provide an advanced level of training in all of the necessary skills associated with the use of the language, namely reading, writing, speaking and listening comprehension. Readings in the course will be supplemented by films and documentaries on relevant topics.In-class discussion is designed to help develop oral competency in idiomatic spoken Hindi-Urdu and to express relatively sophisticated ideas and opinions in a culturally and linguistically authentic manner.

HNDI 302. Advanced Hindi II

Advanced Hindi 302 is designed to provide an advanced level of training in all of the necessary skills associated with the use of the language, namely reading, writing, speaking and listening comprehension. Readings in the course will be supplemented by films and documentaries on relevant topics.In-class discussion is designed to help develop oral competency in idiomatic spoken Hindi-Urdu and to express relatively sophisticated ideas and opinions in a culturally and linguistically authentic manner.

HNDI 410R. Hindi Advanced Language and Culture

Study and discussion of written and audio-visual texts dealing with Hindi literature and literary traditions, as well as various aspects of Indian culture and society.

HNDI 497R. Directed Study in Hindi (Undergraduate)

Prerequisites: Hindi 302 or equivalent and permission of the instructor. Can be used for directed study of Hindi literature in the original or for other interdisciplinary research in Hindi.

HNDI 797R. Directed Reading in Hindi (Graduate)

Graduate students who wish to study Hindi-Urdu must contact the Hindi-Urdu Language Coordinator to discuss placement and to receive permission to register for HNDI 797R.
